Insect and Pollinator Month

Students at all schools are learning about insects, pollinators, and the small inhabitants of the garden.

Hooray for knowledge.

Harrison Park All School Garden Work Day

We had great success at the Harrison Park All School Garden Work Day. Nearly all the beds got planted with spring seeds. The first two rows were created in the mini farm and one row was planted with brassicas. Many Harrison Park students got to taste pea shoots for the first time ever.

Winter

Students in Nature Club created their own winter trees from branches that fell to the ground in a wind storm.

One of Bridger's raised garden beds got a covering for the chilly weather. Students helped to create it before school on a late opening morning.

At Harrison Park, the large plot between the community garden and the school garden beds has been tilled up and planted in cover crops.

The Austrian Peas and Winter Cereal Rye have sprouted.

Winter is here, no doubt, and together with students, we are gardening through it.

Saving Seeds

I recently had the lovely experience of leading one of Brooklyn's SEASONS after school sessions for her. Since it was a pretty rainy day, the students and I worked on some seed saving. They shelled dried beans that had been grown by fellow students. We then cut out seed packet envelopes from an old beautiful calendar, filled them with beans, and labeled them.

Here are some photos of the children's handiwork:

Happy seed saving to you

Fall Harvests and Food

It is hard to believe that November is upon us.

September we welcomed students to the Gardens through All School Events, and October flew by as we harvested, taste tested, and created dishes from the bounty of our Harvests.
